This thickening of blood is done by cholesterol and other substances. Cholesterol is an essential element in our body. Cholesterol is made available in the body by two sources. The first and major source is liver along with some small contribution from other organs. The second source is diet and absorption through intestine. Cholesterol is used by different parts of our body, especially brain cells. Excess of cholesterol in blood causes problem.

Cholesterol can not flow independently in blood. Hence it takes help of proteins known as lipoproteins. There many kinds of lipoproteins. We are interested about two lipoproteins- 1. Low Density Lipoproteins ( LDL) and 2. High Density Lipoproteins ( HDL). Both HDL and LDL carry cholesterol in blood.

LDL-Cholesterol or popularly known as “Bad Cholesterol” presence in blood has been identified as the most important factor for increasing the risk of coronary heart disease. On the other hand, high presence of HDL-Cholesterol in blood has been marked as a sign of good health. Research is on to find out agents that will increase the level of HDL-Cholesterol in blood. As on date, exercise or very active lifestyle is the only way by which HDL-Cholesterol in blood can be increased.

Reduction of LDL-Cholesterol is one of the most important treatment objectives in reducing the incidence of heart disease.
