Diabetes is a metabolism disorder in which a person has high blood sugar. The food we eat is digested and the glucose makes its way into our bloodstream. Pancreas secrete insulin and the cells use the glucose for energy and growth. However, glucose cannot enter our cells without insulin being present. In case of diabetes the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced.
There are three main types of diabetes:
1. Type 1: This is also known as insulin-dependent, immune-mediated or juvenile-onset diabetes. It results from body’s failure to produce insulin. People with this form of diabetes need injections of insulin in order to control the blood glucose levels. It usually occurs in children and young adults.
2. Type 2: This is sometimes called non-insulin dependent diabetes or adult-onset diabetes, and accounts for at least 90% of all cases of diabetes. It is characterized by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency, either of which may be present at the time when diabetes is clinically manifested. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs after the age of 40 but can also occur earlier.
3. Gestational diabetes (GDM): This is a form of diabetes where in of high blood glucose levels are noted during pregnancy. GDM usually disappears after pregnancy but women with GDM and their offspring are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
